What to Do in a
Dental Emergency
If you are in pain or have a dental emergency, call us immediately. We will do our best to see you the same day.
If we are unavailable, call NHS 111 for urgent dental advice, or 999 if you have severe swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water. If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth. Keep any broken pieces if possible and call us immediately. Do not try to fix the tooth yourself
Severe Toothache
Take over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks. Do not put aspirin directly on the tooth or gum. Call us as soon as possible.
Lost Crown
Avoid chewing on the affected side. If you have the crown, keep it safe and bring it with you. Dental cement from a pharmacy can provide temporary relief until you see us.
Lost Filling
Avoid chewing on that side. Over-the-counter temporary filling material from a pharmacy can help in the meantime. Call us as soon as possible to arrange a replacement.
Swelling or Abscess
Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your face to help reduce swelling. Do not apply heat. Do not try to burst the abscess. Call us immediately as this requires urgent treatment.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently with milk or saline, do not scrub it. Try to reinsert it into the socket if possible, or keep it in milk or saliva. Call us immediately — time is critical.
