UNDERSTANDING BRACES

What Are Braces?

Teeth do not always grow in perfectly straight lines. Genetics play a big role, but crowding, spacing, bite issues and misalignment can also develop during childhood as the jaw grows, or later in life as teeth naturally shift over time. For many people, misaligned teeth have a direct impact on their confidence, but they can also make cleaning more difficult, lead to uneven wear, cause jaw pain and affect oral health.
Braces work by applying gentle, continuous pressure through a system of brackets and wires, gradually guiding your teeth into the correct position over time. Today's braces are nothing like the bulky metal braces of the past, modern options are far more discreet, comfortable and barely noticeable, with smaller brackets, tooth-coloured or ceramic materials, and even fully hidden options available.
From your very first visit, we carry out a full assessment to determine the right type of braces for your case and explain exactly what to expect throughout your treatment. Treatment takes between 12 and 24 months depending on the complexity of your case, with regular appointments to monitor your progress and make adjustments along the way. At the end of the treatment, a custom retainer is included to hold your teeth in their new position permanently, so your results last for life.

  • Full orthodontic assessment and personalised treatment plan
  • Regular monitoring and adjustment appointments
  • Retainer included at the end of treatment
  • Complimentary whitening kit

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Braces

Are dental braces right for me?

Dental braces are one of the most versatile and effective orthodontic treatments available, suitable for teenagers and adults alike. They are an excellent option for correcting crowding, spacing, and bite issues — including more complex cases that may not be suitable for clear aligners alone. A consultation with our orthodontist will assess your specific needs and confirm whether braces are the most appropriate treatment for your smile goals.

What are the benefits of dental braces over clear aligners?

Fixed braces offer a higher degree of precision for complex orthodontic cases and work continuously without relying on patient compliance. They are often the preferred clinical choice for significant bite corrections or cases involving multiple teeth requiring careful, controlled movement.

Are dental braces suitable for adults?

Absolutely. Orthodontic braces are equally effective for adults as for teenagers. Many adult patients choose fixed braces for their precision and reliability, particularly when treating more complex alignment or bite issues.

Will braces affect my speech?

Some patients experience a brief adjustment period during which speech may feel slightly different. This typically resolves within a week or two as you become accustomed to wearing your braces.

Are dental braces painful?

You may experience some mild discomfort or pressure for a few days after fitting and following each adjustment appointment. This is entirely normal and usually settles quickly. Over-the-counter pain relief can help if needed.

How long does brace treatment take?

Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of your case, but most patients wear fixed braces for between 12 and 24 months. Your orthodontist will give you a clearer indication of your expected treatment length during your consultation.

How do I clean my teeth with braces?

Good oral hygiene is especially important during brace treatment. Your orthodontist will provide detailed guidance on brushing, flossing, and using interdental brushes to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment.

How often do I need to visit the clinic during treatment?

You will typically attend adjustment appointments every 6–8 weeks throughout your treatment, allowing your orthodontist to monitor progress and make any necessary wire changes.

What happens after brace treatment?

Once your braces are removed, custom retainers are fitted to hold your teeth in their new position. Wearing your retainers as directed is essential for maintaining your results long term.

Are dental braces available on the NHS?

We are a private dental practice and do not offer NHS orthodontic treatment. However, we offer 0% finance over 12–60 months to help make treatment as accessible as possible.
